Went on the grand tour, which was a 3 hour boat ride around the islands. Got a top seat which was amazing, arrive early!! Seats fill up fast. Snacks and drinks on board but bring your own booze.
The weather was amazing!
This is my personal opinion of one experience so I have nothing to compare it to. Perhaps another day it would have been different.
Felt like the staff maybe ready for tourist season to be over. No one walking around talking to guests. Captain gave standard off a script tour. Although captain says ask questions no one made an effort to be available or engage. One deck person actually sat in a seat close to me and just said he was board he'd done it so many times. This was the only time I've done the tour but didn't feel it was worth $60. I was disappointed.
We booked the Grand tour, was about 2 hrs and 45 min round trip. The day was a bit windy and cold on the top deck but worth every minute!! Our Captain was friendly, very professional and knowledgeable with a touch of entertaining, while also giving us periods of “I’ll put the mike down and let you enjoy the view”. He turned the boat around at points if interest so we didn’t feel like we had to move to different sides just to see the view. Eagles, caves, lighthouses etc are all easily viewable from this tour- absolutely worth the price!
This was a beautiful tour! I highly recommend the grand tour, and if it's kinda chilly, I highly recommend a blanket and good coat!! Get there early, it's first come first serve for seating!! The tour was fun, and informative. I love the cliff caves!! They do go around so both sides can see them!! The captain makes it very interesting and you learn a lot about the islands!
The staff in the office were not the friendliest. We did love Captain Mike. The views of Devils Island were AMAZING! However, only the seats by the edge were good for viewing. I tried standing but Shannon told me I had to sit. We got in line 15 minutes early and there were so many people ahead of us. If you're going to do, I suggest getting in line 1 hour early, you'll really want to sit on the outside seats; wear a hat and an extra layer more than you think you'll need.
Great narration on this tour and I appreciated the Captain's efforts to turn the boat so both sides got good views of the attractions. Bathrooms on board were clean. My particular cruise was full, due to a tour bus, which made taking photos a bit hard, but I don't know if all cruises are full. Snacks and drinks are available for purchase on board. The staff in the office is unfriendly. There is no restroom in the office area. Parking can be hard to find as many areas around the marina are marked as 2-hour parking. So allow yourself time to park.
What a great way to see most of the apostle islands in one trip. I was there a little early in the season so the light houses were not open yet and it was still quite cold, but the boat trip was great. We sat outside and inside because the further you go out into Lake Superior the colder it gets. The crew was great and the photos were fabulous of Devils Island. Worth the trip!
I do think the islands are a must see. But it is important to note that most of the formations are on Devils Island. It is a fairly long ride to get there. We were gone for just under 3 hours. They serve drinks and snacks, but know that it is cash only. You can pack your own drinks and food if you work like. My youngest daughter lost interest at times because of the long boat rides.
